Biodiversity and Cultural Diversity in Mexico
Mexico is a very diverse country. It is considered a mega-diverse country. The biodiversity of Mexico plays hand in hand with the cultural diversity of the country. Some of the biodiversity is what makes the culture of Mexico so rich and different from others. Things such as food that originates from Mexico, animals and tourism all make up the culture of Mexico. These are very diverse things that make biodiversity and cultural diversity connect.
When it comes to food that is something that makes up the cultural diversity in Mexico. Mexico is home to many different ingredients that are not only special to Mexico but are also used worldwide. Ingredients such as chocolate, tomato, maize and corn, vanilla, avocado and guava (Biodiversity in Mexico). Many different types of beans are also a huge part of the cultural diversity in Mexico (Biodiversity in Mexico). With my mother being from Mexico I understand how important these foods are to our culture. In just about every meal that my mother makes at least one of these ingredients is used. That’s also the case when I visit Mexico. Another ingredient, chili peppers, were used so much during the Aztec civilization and it is still used in Mexico’s culture today (Traditional Mexican Food). Just like some of the other ingredients, chili peppers is something that I always eat with my food everyday simply because it is a staple of the culture in Mexico. These native foods that grow in Mexico mean so much to the culture which is why biodiversity and culture is connected.
When it comes to animals, the jaguar is symbolic to Mexico. This animal means so much to Mexico dating all the way back to the first people of Mexico, the Olmec as well as the more known people, the Aztecs (The Jaguar in Mexico). The jaguar has meaning to people not only now but has been meaningful to the very first civilizations in Mexico. The jaguar in the Mexican culture is viewed as an equal to people (The Jaguar in Mexico). They are prey to no other animal and are always the hunter, just like human beings. The jaguar has been a huge part of art and religion in ancient Mexican civilizations (The Jaguar in Mexico). This is the most important and symbolic animal to Mexico not only in the past but also in the present.
Finally, tourism is something else that connects biodiversity and cultural diversity in Mexico. All types of people visit Mexico to see what it has to offer. Some of the favorite destinations are the beautiful beaches scattered all around Mexico. There are also amazing architects and sculptures from the Mayan civilizations that date back to 600 AD to 800 AD. Chichen Itza is the largest of the Maya cities and one of the most visited tourist places in Mexico. The most famous landmark of this city is the temple-pyramid of El Castillo (Touropia Travel Experts). This specific landmark was made by ancient Mexican civilizations and attracts people from all around the world.
These are all ways in which biodiversity connects with cultural diversity. Things such as food, animals and tourism all work hand in hand. They are all equally important in making the culture of Mexico rich. If it weren’t for the biodiversity, Mexico would not have much cultural diversity.
